Another type of throw in ultimate frisbee is called the thumber. It’s called a thumber because the disc is held between the thumb and the rest of the fingers and the spin on the disc is generated when you throw the disc off your thumb. As you can see by the grip in Main Thumber Grip, the thumb goes along the inside of the rim. There are variations on where the fingers go as shown in Squanto Grip and Split Finger Grip.
Obviously you want to be practicing the right throwing techniques. You should also learn how to practice the right practice techniques.
Research by psychologist K. Anders Ericsson indicates that anyone can become a master at any task if they devote 10 000 hours of deliberate practice. Um, that’s a lot of hours. What I want to focus on here is not the volume of practice, but the words “deliberate practice.” Even putting in the hours is not enough. It must be “deliberate” practice. If every hour you invest in throwing is deliberate practice, you will improve much more quickly that someone who just dicks around with the disc for twice as long.

What factors are involved in becoming a good thrower? Obviously you need to have a lot of practice. But is there more than that? I believe that there are 2 elements to becoming a good thrower: determination and the ability to be coach-able.

From my experience coaching and playing sports, I’ve come to a few conclusions:
1. The best players aren’t usually the best coaches (more often than not they aren’t)
2. The best teams are the one who play together as a team the best; not necessarily the team with the best players
3. Captains of a team are the players who lead by example, encourage rather than complain, and aren’t necessarily the best players (although many times one of the captains is usually the best player on the team)
Now, when you go to pick your team, I would keep those 3 things in mind and approach it like so:
